Motion text

That this House notes the biennial Defence and Security Equipment International arms fair will take place at the Excel Centre in London's Docklands from Tuesday 10 to Friday 13 September 2019; understands that over 1,600 exhibitors will display a range of warfare equipment from tear gas and missiles to fighter planes and warships at the arms fair; sees the event as a public manifestation of the support successive UK governments have given to the promotion of arms exports; further notes that the UK Government has invited 67 official delegations including those of authoritarian governments known for their human rights abuses such as Egypt, those accused of violations of international humanitarian law including Saudi Arabia, and those violently suppressing protest like Hong Kong; notes that, while the UK Government claims to have rigorous export controls on paper, the continuing exports to Saudi Arabia while it is bombing Yemen show the controls do not work in practice; stands in solidarity with those who are protesting the exhibition; and calls on the UK Government to stop issuing export licences where the recipient is in an area of conflict or is a human rights violator.
