2019 Session
That this House welcomes that The Murray Trophy – Glasgow was staged by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) at Scotstoun Leisure Centre in partnership with Glasgow Life and Glasgow City Council, Tennis Scotland, and with support from Event Scotland; notes that the event was part of the new and expanded international calendar of tournaments being staged by the LTA across Britain this year, providing a showcase for tennis outside of the traditional summer grass court season and opening up the sport to more fans around the country; appreciates that the LTA named the tournament in tribute to the Murray family’s contribution to the game, with Jamie Murray playing an important role behind the scenes on the planning of the event; further notes that over 5,000 people attended across the week, with around 100 volunteers co-ordinated by Tennis Scotland supporting the event; acknowledges the significant community engagement around the tournament, including heavy involvement from Jamie and Judy Murray for visits to schools and community projects; appreciates the involvement of the Judy Murray Foundation; recognises that around 4,500 school children across the region were introduced to tennis through Tennis for Kids taster sessions; notes that a visually impaired tennis demonstration took place on centre court on finals day; appreciates the participation of all entrants; congratulates Ruben Bemelmans and Daniel Masur on their Doubles victory and Emil Ruusuvuori on winning the Singles trophy; and hopes the event will go on to be an established fixture in the tennis calendar.
