Commemorating the life of Bashir Maan

That this House commemorates the life of Bashir Maan CBE, who sadly passed away on the 20 December 2019, aged 93; appreciates his contribution to public life in Scotland and his work as a community leader, activist and author; understands he was the first Muslim in the UK to hold political office when he was elected as councillor for the Glasgow Kingston council ward in 1970; notes that his extensive commitment to the community led to his Convenorship of the Muslim Council of Scotland and past Presidency of the Islamic Centre Glasgow; recognises that he also held several judicial appointments such as Magistrate,Police Judge, District Court Judge and Bailie of the City of Glasgow; further notes that his achievements were recognised when he was awarded three honorary degrees of doctorate and two fellowships by Scottish universities; and understands that he paved the way for many public figures who came after him and that he will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and the people of Glasgow.
