Motion text

That this House celebrates the 7th International Day of Yoga, on 21 June 2021, first adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015 with the unprecedented support of 177 countries; and acknowledges, at a time when the world has been focussed on a global health crisis affecting every nation, the great significance of every citizens’ choice of freedom in health and healthcare; accepts that yoga is an effective means of maintaining good health and preventing ill health and offers a sustainable and cost-effective means for people to take care of themselves; recognises that yoga empowers patients and restores them as agents of their own health and healing; notes that extensive medical research has shown that yoga has proven health benefits for a wide range of physical and mental disorders; urges that yoga be included in the prevention and well-being initiatives within the National Health Service for both patients and staff, along with the full range of other modalities from India’s traditional sciences; and calls on the Government to introduce a chair of yoga in all medical schools so that the rising generation of medical students gain a thorough grounding in this timeless and time-tested knowledge of health and wellbeing.
