Motion text

That this House warmly congratulates Susan McHugh for organising a campaign for a ceasefire in Northern Ireland and supports her demands; notes that her efforts were supported by 20,000 Irish people at a protest meeting held in Dublin; and believes that the deaths of more than 3,000 people, including 121 children, require a redoubling of efforts to achieve a political settlement.

After a motion has been tabled, other Members can table amendments to it. Amendments to this motion are shown below.

CEASEFIRE IN NORTHERN IRELAND (Amendment 1)
at end add 'recalls that over 200,000 Ulster people held a protest meeting in Belfast in 1985 against the imposed Anglo/Irish Agreement; and trusts that the rising violence and sustained political stalemate arising from that agreement will finally encourage the Government to take note of the feelings of the people as demonstrated at large protest meetings.'.
