Motion text
That this House calls on the UK Government to provide more effective support for those asylum seekers whose desperate plight is evidenced by the dangers and deprivations they are prepared to face in travelling to the UK; notes the commendable work of organisations such as Eastwood Refugee Aid, whose longstanding commitment to supporting refugees locally and overseas has made a significant different to many facing the most challenging of times; appreciates the significant direct support the group has provided via Convoys to Calais; acknowledges the huge community effort the group has spearheaded, including most recently working with local Scouts to assist in fundraising for an initiative designed to assist Afghan refugees; welcomes their initiative and cooperation with East Renfrewshire Council, which has resulted in them securing use of a local hub to enable donations and distribution to take place; thanks the group for their focus on practical support for those in peril overseas and for refugees settling in Scotland; notes the importance of this initiative to the local community; and considers that this tireless work to support asylum seekers and refugees expresses the best values of people across Scotland and the UK, in contrast to those who would prevent the rescue of asylum seekers from the perils of the sea or would push them back, including women and children, into continuing danger.
