Motion text
That this House acknowledges and condemns the human rights abuses suffered by the Talai and Kipsigis people of Kenya when they were violently evicted from their ancestral land by British colonial forces between 1905 to 1963; requests that the Government makes a formal apology for these historic crimes including rape, torture, beatings, unlawful killing, and inhuman and degrading treatment as well as land appropriation; further acknowledges the physical and economic suffering that the Talai and Kipsigis people have endured since colonial times as a result of being relocated to an uninhabitable part of Kenya, with now over 115,000 victims; recognises that the crimes perpetrated against the Talai and Kipsigis are entirely separate from those committed against the Mau Mau which were settled by reparations and an apology in 2013; and calls on the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to respond to the official UN ruling that it must meet with the victims’ representatives to begin a discussion about a new apology and reparations in order to restore justice and dignity to these people.
