Motion text
That this House is concerned that a culture of disregard for the rules has been allowed to develop within the Government; believes that when Members and Ministers do not acknowledge or apologise for making statements that are not accurate and refuse to correct the record, they endanger public confidence in the political system; calls for action to restore faith in our democracy and to strengthen the values of compassion, respect, and integrity in politics; notes that an Elected Representatives (Prohibition of Deception) Bill would make it an offence for politicians to deliberately lie; notes that polling by Compassion in Politics shows that 73 per cent of people support such a law; and encourages the Government to support a Bill so that the public can be confident that there are consequences for politicians who intentionally lie.
