Motion text
That this House is very concerned about the intensified human rights crackdown in Saudi Arabia, including against women; is shocked by the 34-year sentence handed down to Leeds University PhD student Salma al-Shehab for tweets, the 45-year sentence handed down to Nourah al-Qahtani also over her social media activity, and video footage purportedly showing women at an orphanage in Khamis Mushait protesting poor living conditions being attacked by security forces; is dismayed by reports that 120 individuals have been executed in Saudi Arabia in the first six months of this year, with dozens put to death for their participation in pro-democracy demonstrations; believes that the reform programme publicised by the de facto ruler of the Saudi Kingdom Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman will only be credible if it mandates compliance with international human rights law and standards; urges the Saudi Government to end the abuse and unwarranted prosecution of individuals in Saudi Arabia exercising their fundamental rights, including freedom of expression, association, assembly and belief; calls on the Government to publicly express their concern about these cases and the need for the immediate release of all peaceful activists, critics and demonstrators in Saudi Arabia.
