Principles of democracy

EDM (Early Day Motion) 345: tabled on 05 September 2022

Tabled in the 2022-23 session.

This motion has been signed by 49 Members. It has not yet had any amendments submitted.

Motion text

That this House asserts the basic principles of democracy whereby 50 percent plus one of those who vote in a democratic ballot commands a majority for change; rejects suggestions that a future British Government would legislate to require more than half of the entire registered Scottish electorate to vote in a future Scottish independence referendum; notes that the Right Honourable Member for South West Norfolk achieved only 47 percent of eligible votes from the Conservative and Unionist Party leadership election; and calls upon the Right Honourable Member for Holborn and St Pancras to similarly disassociate from a suggestion which this House considers to be fundamentally undemocratic.

The first 6 Members who have signed to support the motion are the sponsors. The primary sponsor is generally the person who tabled the motion and has responsibility for it. The date shown is when the Member signed the motion.
