Motion text
That this House recommends the replacement of the current co-ordinator of the Chagos/BIOT APPG with an administrator who will take no personal public stance on matters related to Chagos and Chagossians and will not attempt to personally influence the views of Parliamentarians; notes that the current co-ordinator has used his position as co-ordinator over many years to publicly promote his own partisan views about the Chagos Islands and Chagossians in newspapers and magazines, that he has publicly promoted the interests of the Mauritian Government in relation to Chagos and that he has promoted his personal views on Chagos to the members of the APPG and other Parliamentarians and to all those on the APPG mailing list; further notes with particular concern that members of the Chagossian community have reported that he has restricted the access of Chagossian community members to the APPG and they feel that he has stifled, censored and corrected their opinions and attempted to diminish their standing and importance to Parliamentarians; notes that Chagossian community members report that he has made attempts to silence or correct what he sees as dissenting views in the Chagossian community and that they have experienced a dismissive attitude to themselves and their opinions; and observes that the Chagossians have been side-lined over many years in matters concerning their future and the future of the island and that many would see this belittling of their views in the APPG as a continuation of their discrimination and marginalisation.
