CONDUCT OF THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH AFFAIRS IN RELATION TO THE BRITISH DETAINEES IN ABU DHABI

That this House is appalled at the refusal of the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, the honourable Member for Morecambe and Lunesdale, to summon the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to discuss the case of the British hostages detained in Abu Dhabi; is astonished to learn that a letter written by the widow of the hostage who died in Abu Dhabi, which was delivered to the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs by the honourable Member for Leicester East four months ago, has not been replied to; considers that an unwillingness to properly defend the rights of citizens abroad is the most dishonourable position that any government could take; demands that urgent action be taken to see that these British citizens be either charged and offered a fair and just trial or released immediately; and believes that it is incumbent upon the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State to immediately express this opinion of this House to the Ambassador and Government of the United Arab Emirates.
