Motion text
That this House congratulates Finlay Menzies, a 20-year-old athlete from Edinburgh, on winning the bronze medal in the men's 100 metres T72 frame running event at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships held in New Delhi, India; also congratulates Italy's Carlo Calcagni and Brazil's João Matos Cunha for coming fist and second respectively; notes that Menzies achieved a personal best of 16.38 seconds in the 100m qualifying heats and then bettered this the same day, just 0.04s away from breaking the British record set by Gavin Drysdale; recognises the significance of this achievement as his international debut and the growing prominence of frame running, an adaptive sport for athletes with coordination impairments such as cerebral palsy; notes that frame running will make its debut at the LA 2028 Paralympic Games, and that Menzies has been selected for the GB Paralympic Futures squad; further commends Menzies for his passion and advocacy for the sport, and his call for greater visibility and inclusion of disabled athletes; thanks Edinburgh Parkrun and Corstorphine Amateur Athletics Club for the support they have provided Menzies, and Novuna as sponsor for team GB; notes that Menzies was the fans’ pick for the Novuna Performance of the Championships, won Sports Person of the Year at The Lothian Disability Sport Awards, and has been shortlisted for the Scottish Athletics Para Athlete of the Year; and wishes Finlay continued success in his athletic career and in promoting disability sport across the UK and beyond.
