Two-child limit

EDM (Early Day Motion) 2256: tabled on 11 November 2025

Tabled in the 2024-26 session.

This motion has been signed by 59 Members. It has not yet had any amendments submitted.

Motion text

That this House recognises that, since the introduction of the two-child limit in 2017, this policy has had a detrimental impact on child poverty rates across the United Kingdom; believes that abolishing the limit represents the most cost-effective measure to reduce child poverty; notes that Trussell reports that doing so would deliver benefits worth approximately £3.1 billion and lift around 670,000 people out of severe hardship, including 470,000 children, by 2026-27; further notes that 28,900 people in Wales would be lifted out of severe hardship by 2026/27; and calls on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to abolish the two-child limit in its entirety in the forthcoming Autumn Budget, in order to transform the lives of millions of children and families by the end of this Parliament.
