Motion text
That this House believes that recent issues at the BBC should in no way be used to impugn the collective integrity and professionalism of journalists; expresses concern at politically-motivated attacks aimed at undermining confidence in public service broadcasting; notes that the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism's Digital News Report 2025 found the BBC to be both the most used and most trusted news brand in the UK, and the world's most trusted international news broadcaster; opposes the threat of legal action by United States President Donald Trump which represents a strategic lawsuit against public participation on a gigantic scale aimed at intimidating free journalistic reporting; calls for worker representation and no political appointments to the BBC board, with the chair and board members chosen by an arms-length body; and urges Government to ensure through the Charter Renewal process that the BBC receives the funds it needs to deliver quality local, regional, national and international news provision and maintain the highest standards of accuracy and impartiality, free from political interference.
