Motion text

That this House notes that 2024 was the deadliest year ever at the UK-France border with NGOs also witnessing increased levels of non-fatal border violence throughout 2024 and 2025; further notes the new Humans for Rights Network report You Can’t Stay, But You Can’t Go has found high levels of state-organised violence against people throughout their time at the border alongside state neglect, as well as the Project Play report We Want To Be Safe documenting a sharp increase in instances of police violence against migrant children and record child fatalities in 2024 at the UK-France border; acknowledges that the Government does not officially record or report on these deaths at the border; and calls on the Government to establish an independent statutory public inquiry into the UK’s role in the escalation of border violence to demonstrate cross-border accountability for incidents and fatalities in the Channel, to end the criminalisation of people seeking asylum, and to ensure the availability of safe and accessible routes to asylum.
