Motion text
That this House celebrates the 50th anniversary of Central Church in Torquay; notes that the foundation stone was laid in June 1975 and the building opened in September of that year; recognises the church’s distinctive white structure and its three crosses, a well-known and much-discussed feature of Torbay’s skyline; further notes that Central Church is a joint Methodist and United Reformed Church, established through the courage and vision of congregations who united their resources 50 years ago to create a place of worship and community service for future generations; acknowledges the wide range of community groups which now use the building, including mental health support groups, Ukrainian learners, children’s theatre, crafters, musicians, and those supporting the homeless, alongside regular concerts and ecumenical gatherings; and pays tribute to the many trustees, volunteers and members whose faith, hope and love over five decades have made Central Church a beacon of welcome, compassion and community at the heart of Torquay.
