Motion text

That this House acknowledges the first anniversary, on Thursday 28 November 2025, of the Closure Notice being issued to the operators of Walleys Quarry landfill site in Newcastle-under-Lyme; welcomes the 365 days, and counting, of relief felt by all those who live, learn and work in Newcastle-under-Lyme; remembers all those impacted by the failures of those in positions of power and influence, at all levels of government, to act swiftly and solve this crisis; gives thanks that the site was finally closed so soon after the 2024 General Election; reiterates its support for a full and comprehensive public inquiry once the site has been safely and securely restored for use by local people and all criminal investigations are fully completed; pledges to secure justice for the people of Newcastle-under-Lyme who were impacted by the worst example of profit over people; warns against partisan games being played by those who should know better and who should have used their positions to secure a closure notice sooner; celebrates the work of all local residents who worked hard to stop the stink; and commits to tackling fraud, abuse and criminality in the waste sector so that the disgraceful situation at Walleys Quarry can never happen again.
