Use of UK bases by the United States and international law in relation to Greenland

EDM (Early Day Motion) 2600: tabled on 12 January 2026

Tabled in the 2024-26 session.

This motion has been signed by 46 Members. It has not yet had any amendments submitted.

Motion text

That this House expresses concern at increasingly explicit rhetoric from the US Administration regarding Greenland; reaffirms that the future of Greenland is a matter for the Greenlanders and the Kingdom of Denmark alone, and that Denmark is a NATO ally whose sovereignty must be respected; recalls the 1952 Churchill–Truman Communiqué, which requires explicit UK authorisation for the use of UK bases, airfields or facilities by United States forces; further recalls that Ministers had confirmed this position in 2006 in a response to a parliamentary question; calls on the Government to put the matter beyond doubt by confirming that the United Kingdom will not grant authorisation for the use of UK bases, airfields or other facilities on British soil to facilitate any US operation directed at Greenland that would compromise Denmark’s sovereignty or otherwise contravene international law; and further calls on the Government to confirm that no operations from UK bases, airfields or facilities will be authorised that contravene international law.
