Motion text
That this House notes with concern new findings from the Less Survivable Cancers Taskforce highlighting a critical lack of research funding for less survivable cancers; recognises that cancers of the brain, liver, lung, oesophagus, pancreas and stomach account for nearly 40% of all common cancer deaths in the UK, yet receive less than one-fifth, 18.92%, of all Government-funded cancer research; further notes that this funding imbalance results in less survivable cancers receiving around £130 less in research funding per cancer death compared to the average across all cancers; acknowledges that over 95,000 people are diagnosed with one of the less survivable cancers each year in the UK, and that more than half of those diagnosed in England will die within one year; further recognises that limited research investment contributes to later diagnosis, fewer treatment options, and restricted access to clinical trials; urges the Government to recognise the scale of this challenge and to address the long-standing research funding gap affecting less survivable cancers; and calls on the Government to review current cancer research funding models, remove barriers to research participation, and actively incentivise greater research into less survivable cancers in order to improve survival and patient outcomes.
