Situation of Kurdish people in Syria

EDM (Early Day Motion) 2664: tabled on 21 January 2026

Tabled in the 2024-26 session.

This motion has been signed by 33 Members. It has not yet had any amendments submitted.

Motion text

That this House notes recent reports of renewed fighting in Syria, a day after a ceasefire agreement was reached between the Syrian Government forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces; acknowledges that this ceasefire followed intense military operations driving Kurdish forces from two Aleppo neighbourhoods wherein more than 155,000 civilians were displaced; also notes that further escalation risks more death, destruction and displacement; therefore calls on the UK Government to support inclusive negotiations between Syrian authorities and Kurdish representatives aimed at an immediate ceasefire; further calls on the Government to demand concrete protections for civilians and minorities, including safeguards against reprisals and forced displacement; urges the Government to advocate for the constitutional recognition of Kurdish identity, language and local self-government; and also calls on the Government to back independent monitoring mechanisms to oversee ceasefire arrangements and document human rights abuses.
