Public toilet provision

EDM (Early Day Motion) 2731: tabled on 02 February 2026

Tabled in the 2024-26 session.

This motion has been signed by 36 Members. It has not yet had any amendments submitted.

Motion text

That this House notes with concern the drop in the number of public toilets, which the British Toilet Association estimates as a decrease of 40% in the last 25 years; recognises, that when mapped onto an increasing population, that equates to roughly one public toilet for every 17,200 people, with worse ratios in more rural parts of the country; highlights the importance of public toilet provision for all, but particularly for those working in outdoor professions, older people, people that are unhoused and people with disabilities; stresses that public toilet provision should be made up of fully accessible and inclusive spaces, equipped to any individual’s requirements; insists on a higher basic standard of public toilet that prioritises cleanliness and safety; therefore urges the Government to develop and publish a plan for increased, quality, public toilet provision across the country; and further urges the Government to introduce a statutory duty for Local Authorities to develop a toilet strategy, supported by Government funding.
