Motion text

That this House celebrates the one hundredth anniversary of the opening of the Babbacombe Cliff Railway in Torquay; notes that Torquay is one of just fourteen places in the UK with an operational Funicular Railway, and celebrates those men and women who have ensured its survival and continued success over the last century, a period where many of the earlier cliff railways have ceased to operate; further celebrates in particular the local businesses and residents who in 2005 formed the Friends of Babbacombe Cliff Railway, secured from Torbay Council funding of some £500,000 to allow essential extensive refurbishment, and established the Cliff Railway as an independent charity operating for the benefit of the local community and visitors to Torbay; and also celebrates all those who have supported the Cliff Railway throughout its history and continue to do so today as trustees, engineers and staff.
