Motion text
That this House recognises the strategic importance of the Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus, including Akrotiri and Dhekelia, in supporting UK and allied operations in the Eastern Mediterranean; notes the United Kingdom’s role as a guarantor power under the Treaty of Guarantee 1960 and the responsibilities this entails for the security and stability of Cyprus; further notes the increasing instability in the wider region and its implications for both British nationals and Cypriot citizens; acknowledges the role of these bases in facilitating humanitarian assistance, evacuation operations and the protection of civilian populations; emphasises the importance of continued cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus in upholding sovereignty, security and international law; and calls on the Government to ensure that all operations conducted from these bases reflect the United Kingdom’s legal and moral responsibilities, prioritise the safeguarding of civilians, and contribute to long-term peace and stability in the region.
