Motion text

That this House congratulates the Cecil Hepworth Playhouse in Walton-on-Thames on reaching the milestone of its 100th anniversary as a theatre in 2026; recognises the extraordinary heritage of the building, originally constructed by pioneering filmmaker Cecil Hepworth in 1899 as part of one of the first film studios in the country; acknowledges that the Playhouse is the last remaining building of that original studio complex and represents an irreplaceable piece of British cultural and cinematic history; celebrates its enduring role as a vibrant community performing arts venue hosting musicals, plays, pantomimes, operas, comedy, dance and open mic events for audiences of up to 160; commends the thousands of local residents whose determined campaign in 2022 and 2023 saved the Playhouse from closure, and the Charitable Trust which took on a 15-year lease from Elmbridge Borough Council in April 2023 to secure its future; pays tribute to the dedication of the volunteers who keep the Playhouse alive, giving their time across every aspect of its operation, from front of house, to technical support and building maintenance, many of whom have performed there themselves over the years; further recognises the Trust's commitment to supporting aspiring performers by helping them engage with groups where they can develop their skills and achieve their ambitions; and also recognises that small theatres are under growing threat of closure, making venues like the Cecil Hepworth Playhouse vital to the social and cultural wellbeing of local communities.
