Motion text

That this House believes everyone deserves high-quality care, to live independently and with dignity; condemns successive Governments for kicking meaningful reform of social care into the long-grass; recognises that the social care crisis is a millstone around the neck of our NHS and that many problems in the NHS cannot be solved without meaningful action on social care; regrets that patients spent the equivalent of 4.34 million days in 2025 stranded in hospital beds waiting for sufficient care arrangements; pays tribute to care workers and the millions of unpaid carers looking after loved ones; acknowledges that a failure to reform social care nationally is bankrupting local government finances, driving up council tax and undermining other services; calls on the Government to re-establish cross-party talks on social care and finalise the Casey Review sooner so reforms can be implemented urgently; and urges the Government to implement Liberal Democrat calls to introduce a new Carer’s Minimum Wage to boost the minimum wage for care workers by £2 an hour and end chronic staff shortages, guarantee personal care in old age, ensure nobody is trapped in hospital by investing in step down care and providing more support for unpaid carers, including reforming the unfair carers allowance, guaranteeing respite breaks and introducing paid carers leave.
