Seafarers in the Strait of Hormuz

EDM (Early Day Motion) 3200: tabled on 23 April 2026

Tabled in the 2024-26 session.

This motion has been signed by 32 Members. It has not yet had any amendments submitted.

Motion text

That this House notes with deep concern reports that around 20,000 civilian seafarers are currently stranded on vessels in and around the Strait of Hormuz due to escalating regional conflict; recognises that these workers, who play a vital role in maintaining global supply chains, including the movement of food and essential goods, are being placed at significant and unpredictable risk; further notes reports from maritime unions and international bodies of crews being detained, targeted or caught in crossfire, and of families receiving limited information about the safety and wellbeing of their loved ones; affirms that seafarers are civilian workers entitled to safe passage, humane treatment and protection under international law; and calls on the Government to work with international partners, maritime unions and welfare organisations to ensure the immediate safeguarding of affected crews and to uphold long standing norms that protect civilian seafarers in conflict zones.
