Motion text
That this House applauds the courage and resilience shown by the Iranian people in standing up to the Tehran regime through protest, and recognises the echoes of the bravery demonstrated following the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022 at the hands of the religious morality police; believes that the regime in Tehran lacks legitimacy in the eyes of the Iranian people; notes with grave concern reports that thousands of protesters have been killed already this year by regime forces; condemns the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for suppressing dissent within Iran and exporting intimidation beyond its borders, including to the UK and its targeting in particular of Jewish and Iranian diaspora communities; calls on the Government to move without delay to sanction Iran’s senior leadership and proscribe the IRGC to ensure that Iran’s decision-makers are held to account for their attacks on peaceful protesters; further calls on the UK to take a leading role in securing justice, including by urging the United Nations Security Council to refer crimes against humanity committed by the Iranian Government against its own people to the International Criminal Court (ICC); and urges the Government to commit to using the UK’s satellite capabilities both to document and preserve evidence of human rights abuses, in support of an ICC investigation, and to support the restoration of internet access in Iran.
