Approval for China’s new embassy

EDM (Early Day Motion) 6: tabled on 13 May 2026

This motion has been signed by 32 Members. It has not yet had any amendments submitted.

Motion text

That this House expresses deep concern about the Government’s decision to greenlight the construction of a Chinese mega-Embassy in London; notes with grave anxiety the potential national security risks posed by the proposed Embassy, including an increased capacity for surveillance and intimidation linked to the Chinese Communist Party; acknowledges the strong objections raised by pro-democracy Chinese and Hong Kong activists about the proposals for a mega-Embassy; calls on the Government to ensure that there is the right to peacefully and safely protest outside the proposed site of the Embassy; further calls on the Government to include all Chinese officials, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region officials and Chinese Communist Party-linked organisations on the enhanced tier of the Foreign Influence Registration Scheme; stresses the importance of the Government urgently publishing its promised UK-China Audit in full, outlining the threats posed to the UK's values and interests by the Chinese Communist Party; and urges the Government to reverse its decision to approve the mega-Embassy.
