Motion text

That this House notes with concern that the United Kingdom is still importing hunting trophies; further notes that the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora Trade Database shows that in 2024 such imports included trophies from Appendix I-listed species, among the most endangered in the world, including African elephants, leopards and black rhinoceroses; also notes that imports were licensed from a wide range of other species, including lions, giraffes, hippopotamuses, white rhinoceroses, bears, crocodiles, primates such as baboons and vervet monkeys, zebra, wolves, servals, caracals, civets and even a honey badger; recognises that the data demonstrates the continued import of significant numbers of trophies from iconic and ecologically important species, including at least 18 giraffes, over a dozen lions, and multiple primate and antelope species; is concerned that these trophies include both wild-sourced and captive-bred animals, including those associated with so-called canned hunting; acknowledges that opinion polls show the British public support an immediate and comprehensive ban on trophy hunting imports; notes that a Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs consultation found that 86% of over 44,000 respondents supported a total ban on the import of hunting trophies; commends the work of the Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting and coalition partner organisations, including Campaign Against Trophy and Canned Hunting, in investigating the industry and raising awareness of the impacts of trophy hunting; and further recognises that the Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill has previously passed all stages in the House.
