Motion text
That this House condemns the interception by the Israel Defence Forces of vessels forming part of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters; notes with grave concern reports that 428 humanitarian volunteers from 40 countries have been abducted and detained while attempting to bring attention to the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza; further notes that those detained include Dr Margaret Connolly, sister of Irish President Catherine Connolly, alongside Irish citizens and others acting in solidarity with the Palestinian people; believes that the seizure of civilian vessels in international waters represents a serious violation of international law and forms part of a wider pattern of impunity in Israel’s conduct towards Gaza; reaffirms that the people of Gaza must not be collectively punished, starved, besieged or denied access to humanitarian assistance; calls for the immediate release of all those detained, full consular access, the return of seized vessels and property, and an independent investigation into the interception; and further calls on the UK Government to support unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza by land, sea and air, and work urgently with international partners to secure a permanent ceasefire, the release of hostages, the protection of civilians, and an end to the occupation and blockade.
