Motion text

That this House notes with alarm that after three years of conflict, over 33 million people, including 17.3 million children, are in need of humanitarian assistance in Sudan, that famine has been confirmed in Al Fasher and Kadugli, with 20 additional areas at risk, and that over 14 million people have been displaced from their homes; further notes that civilians in the country are facing incredible hardship, fear and suffering; expresses grave alarm at the increase in widespread gender based and sexual violence; regrets that the UK’s international aid spending is on track to reach its lowest level since 1999, having been cut from 0.5% to 0.3% Gross National Income (GNI); recognises that the UK is the United Nations Security Council penholder on Sudan; acknowledges the impact of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on mobilising crucial humanitarian supplies; calls on the Government to play a stronger role in seeking an immediate ceasefire and peace process focused on establishing a civilian-led, democratic government in Sudan; urges the Government to lead action to set up a Sudan-wide arms embargo to prevent the supply of weapons to the conflict by other countries; believes that the Government must do more to push for unrestricted humanitarian access to reach those most in need; and expects the Government to strengthen efforts with international partners to properly fund the UN Appeal and the regional refugee response.
