Motion text
That this House marks Srebrenica Memorial Week 2026 and commemorates the 31st
anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War, in which more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys were murdered because of their Muslim identity; believes that remembrance of Srebrenica sends a powerful message that we must never forget where anti-Muslim hatred, dehumanisation, and division can lead; remembers all those who were murdered, displaced, bereaved, and affected by the genocide and the wider atrocities committed during the Bosnian War, including up to 50,000 women and girls who were subjected to rape and sexual violence as weapons of war; recognises the judgments of international courts that the massacre at Srebrenica constituted genocide; pays tribute to survivors, victims’ families, the Mothers of Srebrenica, and all those who continue to preserve the memory of those who were killed; commends the work of Remembering Srebrenica, including its national and regional boards, volunteers, Community Champions and partners, in educating people across the United Kingdom through schools, local authorities, places of worship, community organisations, police forces, and civic institutions about the consequences of anti-Muslim hatred, dehumanisation, division, and genocide denial; reaffirms the importance of remembrance, truth, justice, peace, and social cohesion; and calls on the Government to continue supporting Srebrenica genocide education, remembrance, and initiatives that help prevent future atrocities.
