Motion text
That this House celebrates the 160th anniversary of Torbay RNLI, established in 1866 in the aftermath of the devastating Great Storm of January that year; notes that during one night of exceptional violence around 60 ships were wrecked in and around Torbay and more than 70 sailors lost their lives, with much of the community’s fishing fleet destroyed; recognises the remarkable courage and community spirit shown by local people during the disaster; further notes that the nearest lifeboat was located at Teignmouth and was hauled some 10 miles overland in an effort to rescue survivors; commends the establishment of Torbay RNLI later that year in response to the tragedy and its subsequent 160 years of dedicated lifesaving service to mariners, residents and visitors alike; welcomes the StormFest 160 commemorations marking this important anniversary, including the recreation of a 19th century lifeboat reflecting the station’s origins; pays tribute to all past and present RNLI volunteers, crews, fundraisers and supporters whose selfless service has saved countless lives at sea, supporting those in our merchant vessels, fishing fleet and leisure crafts; and thanks all those who continue to give their time and expertise to protect people at sea and around the nation's coastline.
