Furniture poverty and access to essential household goods

That this House recognises the growing problem of furniture poverty affecting millions of people across the UK, including many tenants entering social housing with little or no access to essential household furniture and appliances; notes that the absence of basic items such as beds, sofas, tables, chairs, cookers, fridges and washing machines can have serious consequences for physical and mental health, educational attainment, financial resilience and social inclusion; further notes that many households are forced to rely on high-cost credit to acquire essential furnishings, increasing the risk of debt and hardship; acknowledges the valuable work undertaken by local authorities, housing associations, furniture reuse charities and community organisations in supporting residents experiencing furniture poverty; believes that a safe, secure and sustainable home should include access to the basic furniture and white goods necessary for everyday living; and calls on the Government to develop a national strategy to address furniture poverty, strengthen support for furniture reuse and circular economy initiatives, review the adequacy of available financial assistance for low-income households moving into social housing, and work with the social housing sector to ensure that no tenant is left without the essential household items required to live with dignity.
