Cosmetic specifications for fresh produce and national food security

EDM (Early Day Motion) 681: tabled on 01 September 2026

Tabled in the 2026-27 session.

This motion has been signed by 18 Members. It has not yet had any amendments submitted.

Motion text

That this House notes with concern the impact of extreme summer heat on UK fresh produce; calls for greater flexibility in cosmetic specifications for fresh produce, given that appearance does not reflect nutritional value, in order to reduce food waste before it leaves the farm gate; further calls on the Government to strengthen the powers of the Groceries Code Adjudicator to protect both producers and consumers; believes that food security is national security; and further believes that a Good Food Bill would help transform England's food system to reduce reliance on foreign imports rather than domestic self-sufficiency, improve access to nutritious food, support lower prices for consumers, and establish a statutory national food strategy.
