Motion text

That this House recognises the urgent need for comprehensive reform of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provision; believes that every child deserves the right support, in the right environment, at the right time; acknowledges that children have different educational needs and abilities and that not every difference in behaviour, personality or learning requires a medical diagnosis; calls for earlier identification of additional needs, timely assessments and appropriate educational support without requiring children to obtain a medical diagnosis unnecessarily; urges an independent review of diagnostic pathways and assessment standards, including evidence of overdiagnosis, underdiagnosis and misdiagnosis; supports the expansion of vocational, technical and practical education, including engineering, construction, agriculture, mechanics and computing, alongside funded apprenticeships, supported internships and meaningful work experience; further calls for greater emphasis on physical education, competitive sport, outdoor learning and practical life skills; further urges an end to geographical inequalities in Education, Health and Care Plan provision through consistent national standards, timely delivery of statutory support and increased communication with parents; further supports increased investment in specialist schools, specialist units within mainstream schools, SEND training, classroom resources, and support for teachers; further recognises the importance of parental involvement and responsibility in children's education and development; and also calls on the Government to deliver an education system that recognises individual abilities, prepares young people for employment and independent living, and ensures that children with genuine disabilities and additional needs, with their parents, receive appropriate specialist support in a timely manner.
