Motion text

That this House expresses its profound sorrow and deep sadness at the tragic and untimely passing of Portaferry native, two-time Olympian, and European Champion, Ciara Mageean, on 1 November 2026 at the age of 34, following a courageous and inspirational battle with stage four bowel cancer; notes with immense pride her legendary athletics career, during which she became the standard-bearer for modern Irish and Northern Irish middle-distance running, culminating in her magnificent 1500m Gold Medal at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome, alongside her historic Commonwealth Silver for Northern Ireland in 2022 and her multiple national records; pays tribute to her extraordinary strength, candour, and resilience in sharing her final journey publicly to raise critical awareness for bowel cancer, capturing the hearts of the nation through her final memoir, My Greatest Race; extends its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to her devoted husband Thomas, her loving parents Chris and Bryde, her siblings, her wide circle of friends, and the global athletic community; and further notes that her radiant spirit, warmth, and enduring legacy will continue to inspire generations of young athletes across Strangford, Northern Ireland, and the world.
