Motion text
That this House unequivocally rejects all demands for the United Kingdom to apologise or pay reparations for its historical involvement in slavery; declares that this House will not apologise for slavery, nor support any apology issued on its behalf; recognises Britain's leading role in the abolition of the slave trade, commends the extraordinary efforts of the Royal Navy, whose sailors lost their lives intercepting slave ships, liberating enslaved people and suppressing the international slave trade; notes the considerable resources Britain committed to combating slavery internationally and the diplomatic pressure exerted upon other nations to abandon the practice; believes that modern British taxpayers owe neither an apology nor financial compensation for the actions of previous generations; considers it an incredible insult that governments should demand reparations from the very nation that committed substantial resources and sacrificed British lives to suppress the slave trade; calls upon governments demanding reparations to formally acknowledge Britain's contribution to abolition and publicly express their gratitude for the sacrifices made by British servicemen; demands the immediate termination of all foreign aid, development assistance and taxpayer-funded grants to any country whose government formally demands slavery reparations from the United Kingdom; further calls for a prohibition on issuing UK visas to citizens from nations advancing such demands; and affirms that Britain should take pride in its historic contribution to ending the slave trade rather than submit to demands for apologies, penalties or perpetual national shame from those who hate everything about the British as a people.
