Motion text
That this House congratulates the Somali Community Parents Association (SOCOPA) in Leicester on its 20th anniversary; recognises two decades of work supporting Somali and East African communities and people from more than 40 nationalities through bilingual advice and drop-in support, free adult English classes, study support for young people, family support and emergency food provision; notes that SOCOPA’s latest figures show over 2,200 clients supported, with thousands of referrals and support requests handled and hundreds of English classes delivered; pays tribute to its trustees, staff and volunteers, many of whom give their time to help families navigate complex systems at moments of crisis; believes that grassroots organisations rooted in the communities they serve play a vital role in integration, tackling poverty and strengthening community cohesion; and calls on the Government to recognise the contribution of such organisations and to ensure sustainable funding for community-led advice services and English language provision, so that they can continue their work for the next 20 years.
