Suggested amendment

leave out from 'action' to end, and add 'and that the legality of the Danish decision should be recognised as having ended the Maastricht treaty; considers that the nations of the EEC should now go back to the drawing board and commence moves towards a new treaty for a fully fledged democratic, social and federal European Community which would itself contain a harmonised amending procedure, including requirements for the holding of simultaneous referenda in every Community state'.

Original motion text

That this House congratulates the Danish Government and people in holding a referendum on the terms of the Maastricht Treaty; believes that the outcome is a good example of democracy in action; considers that the consequencies of the Danish referendum should be for the Danish people alone and not be visited upon the peoples of the other eleven Community states; and calls upon Community leaders either to seek the withdrawal of Denmark from the Community or to organise simultaneous referenda in every Community state in order to avoid the people of one or two countries effectively determining the future development of Europe.
