That this House notes that British Coal has applied for planning permission to mine, by opencast methods, the site known as Lomax in Greater Manchester; believes the granting of such permission will be deterimental in all respects to the communities surrounding the site; recognises that the constituents of the honourable members for Worsley, Leigh and Bolton West constituencies will be worst affected; regrets that this application has gone ahead despite a growing realisation that national energy requirements can be met without an expansion of opencast coal mining; and therefore demands that this intrusive development be rejected.
