Motion text

That this House deplores the fact that significant amounts of British Telecom's massive profits are made at the expense of people on low incomes; notes that for many pensioners and disabled people the phone is an essential life-line; further notes that when the bill for calls is lower than the rental charges, this can act as a powerful disincentive to retain telephone services; believes that rental charges should be waived for pensioners and disabled people; and urges the Government, at the least, to persuade British Telecom not to allow more than 50 per cent. of any quarterly bill to consist of rental charges.
