ANIMAL WELFARE AND THE GATT
EDM #1348
Tabled 20 June 1994
1993-94 Session
That this House is concerned that the GATT may lead to a lowering of European Union animal welfare standards; fears that if the EU wish to prohibit a particular livestock rearing system on the grounds of animal welfare, it may be unable to ban the import of meat, eggs or dairy products from animals reared in that system; further fears that if the EU wished to prohibit the use for livestock of certain hormones, it may be unable to ban the import of food products derived from animals treated with that hormone; supports animal welfare being included as a criterion within the GATT; and urges Her Majesty's Government to seek agreement under the GATT that a contracting party may, on welfare grounds, prohibit the use of an animal husbandry system or a veterinary drug and prohibit imports of products derived from animals reared in that system or treated with the drug provided that such prohibitions apply with equal force to domestic producers as well as importers.
