Motion text

That this House warmly welcomes the decision announced by the Irish Government that it will not seek the renewal of the ban on broadcasts by members of Sinn Fein in the Republic; believes that this decision will play a significant part in improving the prospects for peace in ireland; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to lift the ban which it imposed in the United Kingdom, which undermines civil liberties and weakens the democratic process, which depends upon freedom of access for all citizens to a full range of news and opinion through the broadcasting media.

at end add 'and believes that the lifting of the ban will make it much harder for the apologists of violence on either side of the sectarian divide to avoid public questioning and opprobrium for any past or further acts of violence or intimidation.'.
