TAHIR FAMILY
EDM #329
Tabled 12 January 1994
1993-94 Session
That this House welcomes the decision to designate 1994 as the Year of the Family; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to demonstrate their support for the family by allowing the Tahir family from Blyth, Northumberland to remain in this country; acknowledges the tremendous support the family have already received in their fight to be allowed to stay, including a petition signed by 4,000 local people, hundreds of individual letters to the Home Secretary, resolutions passed by the local Borough and County Council which had all party support, an earlier Early Day Motion No. 1227 signed by 172 Members and letters to the Home Secretary from the children's headteacher and the social services department; notes with deep concern the decision of the Home Office to ignore this tremendous support from local people and the exceptional compassionate grounds by issuing a deportation notice on 23rd December 1993; and calls upon the Government, even at the eleventh hour, to reconsider their decision and show their support for the Year of the Family by allowing the Tahirs to remain in Blyth where they are popular, hardworking and law abiding members of the community.
