Motion text

That this House notes the 257th anniversary on the 29th January of the birth of Thomas Paine; acknowledges that British democrats and indeed democrats around the world owe a debt of gratitude to Thomas Paine as one of the earliest advocates of fundamental and inalienable human rights; believes that the case for fundamental citizen's rights are just as relevant today; and calls on the Government to recognise the anniversary of Thomas Paine's birth by committing itself to the incorporation of the European Convention on Human Rights into British law.
